[inter]dependency
Nørrebro, Copenhagen, DK
Homelessness is the greatest form of dependency -- whether that is dependency on the fortunate for giveaways, dependency on the state for food and shelter, dependency on drugs or alcohol for withdrawal or dependency on companionship among others in the same situation. This dependency finds itself in the form and program of the new homeless shelter, located just north of the Lakes on the quiet end of a popular street in Copenhagen’s upcoming Nørrebro neighborhood. The two separate forms house public and private programs in different volumes, respecting different user privacy needs while depending on each other for support and easy physical and visual connection to all parts of the building. In the public part, there is a cafe, urban living room, and resource center. Behind that, the shelter itself has 50 beds, showers, lockers, and hangout spaces. The shelter works to create a network among the homeless by encouraging interaction through activated living spaces, easy access to outdoor spaces and private yet communal beds. Furthermore, it bridges the gap between homeless and fortunate visitors by creating a welcoming space for all.
